SecondWind Farm
Hay: We harvest about 30+ acres of hay/year
About Us
Finding Inspiration in Every Turn
SecondWind Farm is a 36 acre farm, just 3 miles from historic downtown Hillsborough, NC. Vera, Jim and our shetland sheepdogs (Beau, Pippa & Finn) farm the land. Our crops include peonies, cut flowers, apples, blackberries, grapes, chestnuts and hay. The farm is adjacent to the Eno River. If we are not in the fields you'll find us on the porch. Please call us before you visit.

Our Story
We spent our busy careers in Atlanta & Charlotte and now we both farm the land.
We bought SecondWind in the mid 90s and moved to Hillsborough in 2000.....and now live in the "southern part of heaven".
Vera grew up on a farm and went to UNCG and Bowman Gray Medical School. Following medical school, she did her residency in Anesthesia at Wake Forest and then completed a fellowship in both Pediatric and Obstetric Anesthesia from Emory University. She spent her career in Atlanta practicing Pediatric Anesthesia as a faculty member at Emory and in private practice. After she retired, she spent 6 years doing missionary medicine. She traveled throughout the world providing pediatric anesthesia to patients in impoverished cities and villages.....places like Viet Nam (multiple times), Myanmar, Tibet, Nepal, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. In addition to farming she is an accomplished seamstress and potter.
Jim grew up in NY and Philadelphia and went to Purdue . After Purdue he served as a Supply Officer in the US Navy for 4 years. After the Navy he got an MBA at UGA, then spent the next 24 years in corporate roles.
In 2006 Vera & Jim became partners in their consulting firm and worked with major corporations throughout the world until 2025.

When they moved to Hillsborough, they sold their crops for a number of years at the Hillsborough Farmer's Market. In 2008 they were co-founders (along with 3 other farmers) of the Chapel Hill Farmer's Market.

They are active members of St. Matthews Episcopal Church and love delivering Meals on Wheels once a week.
